Client brief

The layers team wanted to use bold, retro references to inspire a brand identity that would stand out in London's culinary scene and reflect the quality and creativity of their product offer. With the name Layers referencing the depth of viennoiseries and quite literally the layers that make up a pastry, the team wanted to see this in brand assets such as the logo and graphic elements.

Brand identity

The Layers brand design process relied heavily on getting the right 'balance'. With a firm idea on the colour palette from the client, I created a way to use the desired colours without creating inaccessibility or an aesthetic that didn't flow, and used each one as part of a 'rainbow' of colours. Colour combinations and primary and secondary palettes make up a set of design rules that look a lot less 'strict' in the brand's final form.

I also needed to balance the client brief for both bold and a little bit 'undone', so I mixed bold display typefaces and hand-drawn elements to provide cohesion across all of the assets.

The result is a brand that looks both 'natural' to express the quality of ingredients they use, yet creative and distinctive to excite the customer with the tastes they'll experience at Layers.

Project notes

Audience

The layers target audience is young, cool professionals and families who live locally and priorities quality of quantity. They seek out the best culinary experiences in London and understand just how good a great pastry is. Artisinal breads and baked goods are the only way to start their weekends, and they love to shop locally.

This audience feeds through to both the B2C and B2B custom that Layers offers, being both a local bakery and cafe and supplying wholesale to restaurants around London. The businesses that Layers supply to cater to a similar clientele with the same respect for quality cuisine, and the brand connects with both for a seamless experience.
